Waste Management for Navy Vessels

Changing Requirements

Political will, public awareness and changes in operational profiles have obliged Navies to comply with marine environmental regulations.

Onboard waste treatment has become essential to maintain operational flexibility, save cost of operations and protect our marine environment.

Automation and minimised crew engagement in waste handling is of utmost importance. Modern industrial in-service-support concepts are being adapted for use in the fleet to cover logistics and training as much as maintenance and spares support.

Deerberg-Systems has more than 25 years of experience in waste management aboard ships, especially Cruise Ships.

On this basis the Deerberg Navy business areas - RD&D, System Design, Retrofits and In-Service Support – are fully integrated with the marine industry and commercial business processes to serve the Navy requirements for all Navy Vessel types and sizes.

Solutions for Solid Waste

Key to the Deerberg Waste Management
System is the Deerberg Movable Grate Incinerator for burning of solid waste, plastic, food waste, dried bio sludge, sludge- and cooking oil, medical and sanitary waste.

Different equipment sizes accommodate the requirements on naval vessels ranging from Corvettes to Aircraft Carriers.

Sorting- & Non-Sorting Operation: The Deerberg Movable Grate Technology allows for non-sorting operation. Glass and tins are shredded and added to the burnable waste. Their remains in the ash are non-melted material free of organic matter.

Perfect Ash-Burnout Guaranteed: The Deerberg Incinerator is characterised by its quality of materials and workmanship, long lifetime, and highest operational results. Perfect ash-burnout, especially with regard to food and wet waste, is guaranteed. Process controlled burners and a frequency controlled flue gas fan guarantee a self-adjusting and reliable process.

Solutions for Solid Waste

The Deerberg Food Waste Vacuum Transport and Processing System DEVATEC® is reducing the need for scarce fresh water resources.

The system consists of one or more feeding stations - located in galleys, pantries and preparation areas.

A vacuum pump creates the vacuum which transports the food waste to a processing unit where the food waste is shredded. The excess water is pressed out and fed into the waste water treatment plant.

Depending on the total waste management concept the dewatered food waste is either stored in a tank for further burning in the incinerator - if installed, later on shore landing or is discharged overboard, where allowed.

Individual system solutions are available.

AWT Interface

Installed waste water treatment plants, whether standard systems or advanced wastewater treatment plants (AWT), are producing bio-sludge. Deerberg offers an interface which is connecting waste water treatment plants with the onboard incineration systems in order to dewater and incinerate the biosludge.

Recycling Solutions

On small vessels without an incinerator there is the need to reduce the volume of waste for storage.

Also many Navies have a requirement for sorting waste, in particular glass and tins for recycling.

For this purpose Deerberg-System offers a range of compactors, glass crushers, densifiers and plastic melting units.

NEW Movable Grate Incineration
System for Navy Vessels

After working 10 years with traditional incinerators (stiff grate) Deerberg developed the Movable Grate Incinerator for shipboard applications. After its first installation on board Hanseatic in 1989 more than 150 of these Incinerators have been delivered and put into operation, offering highest operational flexibility to the operator.

Sorting- & Non-Sorting Operation: Due to the Deerberg Movable Grate Technology the incinerator can be operated either in a sorting- or non-sorting mode, meaning that glass and tins can be given into the incineration process without prior sorting.

Perfect Ash-Burnout Guaranteed: The Deerberg Incinerator is characterised by its quality of materials and workmanship, long lifetime, and highest operational results. Perfect ash-burnout, especially with regard to food and wet waste, is guaranteed as combustion air is supplied from above and underneath the grate. The ash is non-hazardous according to EPA regulations. Process controlled burners and a frequency controlled flue gas fan guarantee a self-adjusting and reliable process.

Based on the long standing expertise Deerberg is now presenting an Incineration System suitable for Navy Vessels with up to 250 persons on board offering all known operational advantages of the Deerberg Movable Grate Technology.

System Design: The system is a one-deck solution and consists of a two-shaft waste shredder (1) with a small integrated silo (2). From there the waste is transported via conveyors (3) into the burning chamber (4).

The waste falls onto the Movable Grate (5) and is slowly transported through the burning chamber while it dries, gasifies and burns. Combustion air (6) from underneath and above the grate optimally supports the burning process.

The flue gases are burnt in the secondary chamber (7) for perfect emission results - fully compliant with IMO regulations. The burned out residues fall into the ash chamber and are transported via a de-
ashing screw (8) into an ash-container (9).

Alternative Design: The incinerator can also be delivered with a revolving sluice for manual waste feeding. This design increases the incinerator width by 300 mm.
